The Skills, Qualities, and Roles of the 21st Century Public Servant
Jun 12 @ 1:45 pm – 2:45 pm

Excelsior’s new School of Public Service is committed to developing thoughtful, ethical, principled, and wise public servants, leaders who build relationships with a wide spectrum of communities and can see beyond their own worldview.

Register to Attend

Join us for lunch and a panel discussion on the requisite skills, qualities, and roles of today and tomorrow’s public servants, featuring:

  • Mike Acuri, former U.S. Representative for New York’s 24th congressional district from 2007 to 2011.
  • Parris Glendening, 59th Governor of Maryland (Invited)
  • Julia Leighton, General Counsel for the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia.
  • Honorable Paul Tonko, U.S. Representative for New York’s 20th congressional district, a post he has held since 2009.

Dr. Robert Waters, Dean, School of Public Service at Excelsior College will moderate. The distinguished panelists will address such issues as:

  • How do we educate public administrators, government officials, law enforcement, and communities to be more inclusive and fair?
  • What specific challenges do 21st century public servants face?
  • What does the changing role of the U.S. in the world mean for public servants?
  • How do we contribute to society for a greater good?

Excelsior seeks to broaden the definition of what it means to be involved with public service. It goes beyond government and law enforcement; nonprofits and community groups often drive change in our society. And from the private sector, public servants can borrow the spirit of entrepreneurship.
