Webinar: The New Law Enforcement Threat – Cybercrime
Feb 25 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Law enforcement is changing. Almost every “traditional” crime today has some sort of cyber aspect and local, county and state law enforcement must deal with it. Police agencies are now struggling on exactly how to deal with this new type of, oftentimes, faceless criminal who can attack from 1000 miles away, or attack in their own neighborhood without leaving the house. The big cases get the headlines, but it is the local business that is being targeted by cyber criminals. Local, county, and state residents are looking to their police agency to, not only protect them, but to be able to catch those who have committed a cybercrime. So how can law enforcement address the needs of their citizens, prevent attacks and develop meaningful intelligence to get “ahead of the curve”? As one police chief stated “cybercrime is the future of law enforcement.”

Presenter: Bray Barnes, founder and principal, and Robert Bell Barnes, emergency management consultant, Security Evaluation and Solutions Group, LLC (SESG). Bell serves as SESG’s Emergency Management Consultant.

When we think of the impact of the Internet on our daily lives, we can’t help but be astonished at the breadth and depth of the effect it has on all aspects of our world. For the vast majority of us, the Web is our means of accessing Internet resources. The Web employs an innovative and unique method of incorporating text, graphics, audio, video, and links to other sites to allow us to transcend geographical and other barriers as we use it to communicate, search, share, and buy.

In fact, both the Internet and the Web were designed for just that: to enable an open and flexible community of world users to share information freely. The concept of security was not included in its design. This webinar will introduce basic concepts of security while using the internet.

This webinar is the fifth in a series of eight webinars discussing the fundamentals of cybersecurity (Cybersecurity 101).

Presenter: Derek Smith

Derek Smith is responsible for the development and coordination of cyber security initiatives at the National Cybersecurity Institute. Formerly, he has worked for a number of IT companies including Computer Sciences Corporation and Booz Allen Hamilton. Webinar: Information Risk Management in Healthcare
Apr 8 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Recent data breaches and the high visibility around the changes in the threat, from internal to external, has generated a growing chorus that healthcare organizations must now get serious about cybersecurity. While much of this is based on facts, some may be an over-reaction. At the core of determining what really must be done is the centerpiece of healthcare information privacy and security; the healthcare information risk management program.

Since HIPAA was made law in 1996 and as subsequent amendments to the law were enacted, the information risk management program has been required. Additional government initiatives, like Meaningful Use have underscored the requirements. Yet, data shows that between 50 and 75% of healthcare organizations have not adequately implemented an information risk management program that begins with risk analysis.

This webinar will introduce the overall architecture of a good information risk management program. Additionally, it will address the concepts behind mitigation of findings-what do you do when you discover you have a problem? The key point to the discussion will be that even as you implement a good risk management program and you plan for correcting findings, you must also realize that information security is NOT an independent variable. A healthcare savvy approach that understands the clinical and business realities of patient care is necessary to sometimes tailor risk management. In the end, and in the face of even the most scary data breach headlines and news stories, cybersecurity personnel in healthcare know that their solutions cannot be implemented “at any cost.”

Presenter: Sean Murphy

Sean Murphy is the Vice President at Leidos Health Solutions Group and serves as the organization’s Health Information Privacy and Security Officer. He is a health care information security expert, with nearly 20 years of experience in the field serving at all levels of health care from the hospital to an international integrated delivery system. Webinar: Social Media and Law Enforcement
May 26 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

While the use of technology grows as both a resource for law enforcement to educate and as an outreach tool, it is also a source for criminals to obtain private information through open sources such as Facebook®, Twitter™, and blogs. Terrorist groups are using social media to reach multinational audiences in order to spread their ideology, target disenfranchised youth, and encourage domestic terrorism.

Learn about the challenges and the ways local, county, and state law enforcement have used social media as an education and crime fighting tool to combat terrorism in their communities.

Presenter: Bray Barnes

Bray Barnes founded Security Evaluation and Solutions Group, LLC (SESG) to meet a critical homeland security need: specialized services in education and training, emergency management preparedness and planning, and intelligence analyst training. A U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, Barnes has nearly 40 years of legal and law enforcement experience. Most recently, Barnes served as member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Cyber Focus Group, as an adjunct professor and course developer for Ocean County College, and as a member of the institution’s Presidential Leadership Team.

Mobile devices are uniquely susceptible to security risks since they are always on and accessible. They also provide several means of communication and connectivity through text and multimedia messaging, voice, cellular networks, and wireless connectivity using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.
Wireless networks and mobile devices work together. All computer networks are designed to allow various points within the network to communicate with each other and share information. A network can be as simple as one or two computers with printers, scanners or other devices or as complex as the Internet with millions of connected devices.

This webinar will examine mobile security and wireless network security threats. Attendees of the webinar will also learn how to successfully mitigate these threats. This webinar is the seventh in a series of eight webinars discussing the fundamentals of cybersecurity (Cybersecurity 101).
