Critical Cybersecurity Awareness @ Excelsior College
Jan 17 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Cybersecurity is a growing field. If we had the foresight and we integrated computer security the way it was supposed to be integrated 40 years ago there would not be a Cybersecurity field today. It would just be what we did as part of our daily routine. Since we did not have this foresight; we are left to the realm of Cybersecurity and its many mysteries. As a Cybersecurity specialist you must be prepared for problems that do not exist and have the skills to address them. Problem solving skills and critical thinking is essential.

It is a password or credit card issue? Is it the sharing of important information or the theft of that information?

Join Dr. Andrew Hurd, Faculty Program Director of Cybersecurity on January 17 for a discussion on cyber awareness and issues people have to address. A live demo will be performed. Lunch will be provided. This event is free and open to the public.

Register today.

The Marketing Moment: 3 Dynamic Trends Shaping Modern Marketing Practice @ Excelsior College
Feb 16 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

On February 16, Excelsior College’s School of Business & Technology will be hosting another installment of their Redefining Business and Technology in the 21st Century Global Marketplace Lecture Series. This presentation will be conducted by Marketing Faculty Program Director William Trevor on “The Marketing Moment: 3 Dynamic Trends Shaping Modern Marketing Practice.
The theory and practice of marketing is at a crossroads as the conjunction of digital technologies and Big Data have combined to allow marketers to deliver on their promise to both understand and connect with the consumer in a way that was hitherto impossible.  Will Trevor is going to examine three key trends that are currently reshaping the field of marketing – trends that he feels are contributing to this unique ‘marketing moment’ in both the theory and practice of this dynamic discipline.

1.    Content and Storytelling – content has been described as the ‘atomic particle’ of all marketing and much time and creative effort is spent in creating content that resonates with, and delivers value to, an audience.  The creation and curation of content has thrown up new challenges to marketers, particularly with the requirement to disseminate content across a range of channels and media platforms. More recently, many brands, such as Starbucks and BNY Melon, have focused upon storytelling as a way to deliver more authentic content to their various audiences and this is a trend that is helping to evolve the role of content.
2.    The Omni-channel – Before the omni-channel there was the multi-channel approach and while some marketers are still only beginning to switch on to the latter, the omni-channel, however, represents a way of marketing that is a shift in how consumers wish to interact with brands and how organizations need to create an experience that is common across a range of platforms and channels. The challenges of the omni-channel offer a range of opportunity for marketers.
3.    Marketing Attribution – Pioneer of marketing, John Wanamaker, famously said, “half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.” In the more complex world that today’s consumers inhabit, they may engage with a brand at a variety of ‘touchpoints’, whether that was via your social media, website, or video, and so understanding how effective marketing activities are in contributing to the final purchase, have also become correspondingly more complex.  Marketing attribution is about assigning credit, or marketing Dollars, to those particular touchpoints, so that marketers can gain better measurement and insight from their metrics and assess ‘bang for Buck’ more effectively than ever before.

SHRM Webinar: Human Resources as Risk Management
Aug 23 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Risks are inevitable in organizations. There are risks associated with recruiting and selecting employees, health and safety, compensation and benefits, employee conduct, and employee supervision. HR professionals and risk managers must review all the risks throughout their organization and incorporate risk management into all decision making. We must ask questions such as: “Do we provide safe working conditions and do we conduct safety inspections on a regular basis?” “Do we have a performance management system in place?” “Do we have adequate harassment and discrimination policies and procedures?” “Do we conduct an exit interview?” In this webinar we will address risk management strategies, the relationship between risk management and human resource management, and answer questions related to these topics.

Details

The standard view of creativity is one of constant brainstorming punctuated by sudden flashes of genius—it is not something you can be intentional or methodical about. This talk will disprove this, explain how mainstream hits actually happen and provide four ways any creator can increase their odds of making one.

Based on two years’ of research, Gannett interviewed dozens of the world’s leading creatives such as celebrity chefs, multi-platinum musicians, billionaire entrepreneurs, and fine artists. In addition, he talked to the leading scientists and academics who study the field. Based on this, he found four patterns—The Four Laws of The Creative Curve —that all creatives engage in. These laws are not only scientifically valid but can be followed by any aspiring creative.

In this webinar, Allen will give us a sneak peek at his findings.

The Shift Report: Warning Signs and Risk Factors Regarding Suicide and Depression
Nov 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Join Sandra Butterfield, BS in Nursing ’86, and Jessica Cheverie, AS in Nursing ’04, BS in Nursing ’17, as they examine the warning signs and risk factors regarding suicide and depression, and how to prevent suicide from happening to someone you know or love.

Suicide, or the ending of one’s own life, is a tragic event with strong emotional repercussions for survivors and the families of its victims. More than 44,000 people in the U.S. killed themselves in 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, making it the 10th leading cause of death overall. Men are especially at risk, with a suicide rate approximately four times higher than that of women. There are also major disparities among ethnic and racial groups, with American Indian and Alaskan Natives being the highest risk groups. Every day, approximately 105 Americans die by suicide. There is one death by suicide in the United States every 13 minutes. Globally, there is one death by suicide in the world every 40 seconds. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in the world for those aged 15-44 years.

The Shift Report occurs quarterly and is presented by the Office of Alumni Affairs as part of the Alumni Speaker Series. Created and hosted by Alumni Leadership Council Secretary Sandra Butterfield, RN, MSN, MSHA, the series explores issues that nurses and healthcare workers face in the workplace. Questions?
