Combating Cyber Crime and Protecting our National Security

Join us for a conversation with cybersecurity experts
Mark Sullivan and Gregory Scovel. They will discuss
the ongoing battle against cyber threats to national
security and the efforts involved in defeating criminal
and terrorist attacks on American computer networks.

Bray Barnes, director of cybersecurity initiatives at the
National Cybersecurity Institute at Excelsior College,
will be moderating this stimulating conversation.

Former director of the U.S. Secret Service, Sullivan
led initiatives in criminal investigations and protective
operations, threat assessment, risk management, and
technology deployment. As principal of Global Security
Innovative Strategies, Sullivan now consults on various
domestic and international security issues.

During his tenure as former acting director of the Naval
Criminal Investigative Service, Scovel led the agency in
the areas of counterintelligence, combating terrorism,
and law enforcement. Now a private consultant, Scovel
served for a time as vice president of the cyber law
enforcement and force protection division at CACI.

Solomon Keene, Jr., President & CEO of the Hotel Association of Washington, DC
Since 2007, Solomon has served HAWDC in a number of capacities including member services, government affairs, legislative affairs, community affairs, workforce development initiatives, labor relations, and communications. Focusing on issues vital to the hospitality industry; Solomon oversees the implementation of policies and strategies designed to strengthen Association members’ ability to operate hotels in the District of Columbia. Solomon serves as the Secretary/Treasurer to the Local 25/HAWDC Legal, Health & Welfare, 401 K and Pension Funds. Solomon is also a registered Lobbyist for HAWDC. HAWDC was established in 1906 as a non-profit trade association representing the interests of hotels in the District of Columbia. The Association currently represents ninety-seven hotels on a variety of legislative, governmental and public affairs issues.
Solomon currently serves on the Board of Directors for the DC Chamber of Commerce, Destination DC, Washington Convention and Sports Authority, DC Central Kitchen, International Society of Hospitality Association Executives, American Hotel & Lodging Association and the Advisory Board for the College of Business Bethune-Cookman University.

The event will happen from 4 pm to 7 pm with a light reception until 5pm and then an hour of engagement and Q & A for 30 minutes.

Mediation Training

The need for effective conflict resolution is vast, and growing rapidly. Learning how to be effective at mediation is a smart career choice and a socially-fulfilling pursuit. This training is brought to you by two leaders in mediation education: Mediators Without Borders and Excelsior College.

Who is it for?

Those currently in legal, law enforcement, human services or human resources professions who want to add mediation and conflict resolution to their portfolio of skills.  Specifically:

  • Attorneys*
  • Para-Legals*
  • Court Officials
  • Human Resources Professionals
  • Diversity and Human Rights Professionals
  • Anyone who professionally interacts with others and has a mission
  • to create harmony from conflict.
*Attorneys can apply training to Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.

What will we learn?

  • The 24 hours of training is scheduled over three days covering:
  • How to analyze unique conflict styles among the wide variety of personalities;
  • Common workplace conflict resolution techniques;
  • The approach that efficiently manages time and resources and the empirical basis;
  • How to apply training to professional pursuits.

Those who successfully complete the training with 16 hours of coursework online through Mediators Without Borders will receive the Mediators Without Borders Certificate in Mediation and Dispute Resolution.

Training Facilitator: Judge M. Sue Kurita

Judge Kurita is the presiding judge of El Paso county court. She has served on the boards of the Judicial Section of the State Bar of Texas and on the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ). She was elected Vice-President of the NAWJ, and also served as the Chair for the New Judges Program for NAWJ. 

A strong advocate of continuing judicial education, Judge Kurita is a certified Mediators Without Borders mediator and arbitrator. She frequently leads training on the Mediators Without Borders exclusive InAccord® process in mediation and conflict resolution.
